For some people, their jobs are more than just vocations.

Our veterans and first responders go above and beyond to keep us safe, and we want to honor them.

The Hometown Hero for October 2020 is Monica Fahy.

She was nominated by Lori LaBrecque, who wanted to recognize her for all her endeavors, her hard work and support as a member of the Saco Police Department.

Cpl Monica Fahy was the first woman to be honored with the corporal title for Saco. She is hard working, determined, knowledgeable and a fair officer.

While people are running away from the scene, she is running in. While people are scared, sad or emotional, she is there to provide support and sympathy to the families or victims.

Lori revealed a personal story about Monica that captures what makes her a hero after her father in law had a heart attack in 2018.

She said that when Monica got into the home, she realized she knew the family as she had met them once before. Monica was the first on the scene and was there to comfort Lori's very distraught and emotional mother in law, whom she met once.

Monica immediately asked for one of her officers to go to Lori's house to get Lori's husband so he could be there for his mom and dad.

Lori recognized that this action was something the police officer didn't need to do, but in a stressful time, she assessed and took control of the situation while also taking the time to do a good deed.

Monica was instrumental in explaining things to Lori's mother in law and keeping her informed of things that were going on. She also made sure that Lori's mother in law had the time to say her final good byes to her own husband and have her last alone time with him.

Although Lori thought It was a crazy idea seeing how distraught her mother in law was, it was a very special moment for her mother in law.

Lori said she can’t say enough good things about Monica and her professionalism that early morning in December.

"These officers and first responders see and hear things that some of us could never handle or will have to go through, and they deserved to be recognized," Lori said. "Our family was grateful to have Cpl Fahy there that morning. We were very thankful she was on duty that morning, and she was helpful, informative, and most of all supportive. Saco PD is lucky to have her."

Thank you, Monica, for being a Hometown Hero.
