Even though Maine sometimes feels like it is somewhat removed from the rest of the world, we need to remember that we have some great airports that allow us easy access to the rest of the country and beyond.

In addition to many municipal airports scattered throughout the state, we have some great commercial airports, too, like Bangor International Airport, Presque Isle International Airport, Augusta State Airport, and Portland International Jetport.  A flight from these places can take you to a hub city where you can hop a flight to almost anywhere.

In some cases, especially when it comes to low-cost carriers, you can fly directly from these airports to popular vacation destinations like Orland, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee.

Maine is home to one of the best airports in the world

According to the Airports Council International, one of the best airports in the world is here in Maine.

Portland International Jetport was one of the winners selected in the ‘2 to 5 million passengers per year’ category.  The airport also won an award for having the most dedicated staff.

The Airport Service Quality (or ASQ) awards are based on information gathered by frequent passenger surveys.  These surveys ask questions about arrival/departure times, the cleanliness of the airport, how easily accessible the airport is, and how dedicated the staff are to helping passengers.

Other winners in the same category as Portland International Jetport include the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina.

Portland International Jetport

What is now known as Portland International Jetport got its start as an airfield in the late 1920s.  In 1931, commercial flights between Portland and Boston began.  In 1937, the airport was purchased by the City of Portland, and the name was changed to Portland-Westbrook Municipal Airport.

In 2023, the airport served over 2.2 million passengers.

Currently, the airport is serviced by American Airlines, United Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Breeze Airways, and several other carriers.

You can learn more about the airport from the Portland International Jetport website.
