Maine is a paradise for those who love to spend time in the great outdoors.

Our state offers some of the best hunting, hiking, fishing, and boating in New England.

There is a reason why adventure-seekers have been visiting Maine for hundreds of years.

Anglers will tell you that Maine is a great place to go fishing.  Hundreds of ponds, lakes, and rivers dot the state.  These bodies of water are filled with trout, bass, and salmon.

While many of these fish may barely reach the minimum length to be a keeper, some are truly massive.

What was the largest fish ever caught in Maine?

We did some digging to determine the largest fish ever caught in Maine, and were surprised not only by how large the fish was, but by how recently it was caught.

According to the A to Z Animals website, the largest fish caught in Maine was a lake trout that Erik Poland caught on July 2, 2020.

The fish, which was caught in Richardson Lake, weighed 39.2 pounds and was 44 inches long.

The article explains that this monster was trolling in about 90 feet of water.  Poland was reportedly using a DB Smelt Lure.

Of course, it is important to note that this was the largest fish caught inland.  The fish hauled in by people fishing off the coast are much larger.
