Over the last few years, we have seen many major retail chains close locations.

In many instances, these closures were brought on by the pandemic.  However, in some cases, it was that people were choosing to use online retailers instead of brick-and-mortar locations.

It appears that this trend is continuing.

A major pharmacy chain has announced they are closing more locations, some of which are in New England.

Rite Aid Closures

According to MassLive, in the fall of 2023, the massive chain announced that they were filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  At the time of the filing, it was announced that the company was dealing with $3.3 billion in debt.

As a way to deal with the company’s financial issues, the management secured debt reduction agreements from lenders, and made the difficult decision to close over 100 stores.

Initially, it was announced that 154 stores would be closed.  Over the last few months, several hundred more locations were added to the closure list.  This brings the total of Rite Aid locations slated for closure to 431.

While the majority of locations slated for closure are in California, New York, New Jersey, and Ohio, there are several New England locations on the list.

New England Rite Aid Locations Closing in 2024

The following Rite Aid locations have either closed or are in the process of closing. This information is according to MassLive.

Other locations slated for closure include 249 Cuthbert Blvd., Haddon Township (NJ), 2474 Bailey Ave., Buffalo (NY), 7812 Flatlands Ave., Brooklyn (NY), and 17069 South Dupont Highway, Harrington (DE).

Hopefully, these measures will be enough to save the company from complete bankruptcy.  And of course, we hope that any workers affected by these closures will soon find employment elsewhere.
