Most Mainers don't spend a lot of time thinking about snakes.

Unlike the Western United States, and the more tropical parts of the world, we don't have poisonous snakes here in Maine.  While they might creep you out, or even knip at you, they are not going to kill you.

However, that does not mean that we don't have our fair share of the slithering creatures.

Sometimes, they even grow to massive sizes.  Wessie, the snake that snagged national attention as he (she?) slithered through Westbrook, Maine, in 2016.

What about Maine's lakes?  Are there particular lakes that are home to massive colonies of snakes?

The Most Snake-Infested Lake in Maine

According to a recent article on the World Atlas website, there are several Maine lakes that have the right conditions to be the perfect habitat for the snake species that typically live in Maine.

At the top of the list was Androscoggin Lake.

The 3,800-acre lake, located in Leeds Township, has the perfect habitat for snakes native to Maine.

The article says, in part:

"With its blend of wetlands and open water, Androscoggin Lake provides ideal habitats for a variety of snake species commonly found in Maine. The lake's diverse environment, which includes marshy areas, shorelines, and deep waters, aligns perfectly with the preferred habitats of several snake species, including the Northern Water Snake."

There could be thousands of snakes living along the water-saturated shoreline of the lake.

Other lakes and bodies of water on the list include Sebago Lake, West Grand Lake, Great Pond, Flagstaff Lake, and the Union River.
