This Scenic Backroad Ride in Maine is The Perfect Spring Loop
Springtime in Maine is almost a magical experience, isn't it? The peepers begin to emerge, the grass starts to turn green and the seasonal depression symptoms begin fading day after day.
In addition to all of the aforementioned benefits of a Maine spring, one of the best parts is that we can bring back our warm-weather-outdoor activities. Open water fishing, disc golf, regular golf and motorcycle riding just to name a few.
When it comes to exploring Maine on two wheels, there are many different opinions on where the best rides/loops in the Pine Tree State are. However, as someone who has been everywhere in Maine on two wheels, there's one loop that's always a favorite of mine each and every year.
While this ride (which you can do in a car, too!) doesn't take you to any coastal locations, it does take you through some of the most beautiful mountainous areas the state has to offer.
To begin, follow Route 27 into Farmington and hook on to Route 4. From there, you'll cruise through some small Maine towns like Strong, Avon and Phillips. As you carry on you'll think you've left the continent as you enter Madrid- but don't worry, you're still in Maine.
As you continue your journey through Sandy River Plantation, you'll start to get amazing views of Rangeley Lake. Be sure to stop at Smalls Falls for a quick photo op. After you swing through Rangeley and grab a bite at Sarge's Pub, you'll bang a right onto Route 16 and head into Stratton up near Eustis.
Make a quick stop at Pine's Market for some fuel and another photo op in front of Maine's historic Flagstaff Lake. After that, you'll begin your trek back on Route 16/27 where you'll cruise through the Sugarloaf area in Carrabassett Valley.
Eventually you'll end up right back where you started in Farmington! You'll want at least 4 hours to do this ride/drive the right way and take your time. This is a great ride anytime of the year, but it's really great in the springtime.
