
Maine State Police Bomb Squad Neutralizes Possible Grenade
A potentially dangerous situation unfolded in Limington on Monday evening after a suspicious object resembling a grenade was discovered along a roadway.
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, At approximately 5:30 p.m. on March 16, 2026, the Augusta Regional Communications Center received a report from an individual near Number 1 Road who believed they had found a grenade near a dumpster. Maine State Police troopers from the Southern Field Troop were dispatched to the scene to investigate.
Upon arrival, troopers assessed the object and determined it could be a hazardous device. Due to the potential risk, they requested assistance from the Maine State Police Bomb Squad. Bomb technicians responded and conducted an initial evaluation, including an attempt to X-ray the item to determine its contents and stability.
However, officials were unable to confirm the condition of the energetic material inside the device. With uncertainty surrounding its safety, authorities made the decision to proceed with a controlled countercharge, a standard procedure used to safely neutralize potentially explosive items.
The device was successfully detonated on site and rendered safe without incident. No injuries were reported, and there was no additional threat to the public.
Officials noted that the object closely resembled a military-style M67 hand grenade, although it appeared to have been altered in some way. Authorities have not yet released information regarding how the device ended up at the location.
The incident remains under investigation.
