Camping in Maine is a wild adventure, and there's a chance you may spot some of these animals during your trip.

Maine Wildlife is Everywhere, So You'll Probably See Some During Your Trip

One of the wonderful things about living in Maine is that the woods, filled with wildlife, surround us. On my way into work, I'll see at least a couple of the animals on this list almost daily.

So far, knock wood, I haven't seen any moose during the commute. Not that I don't like moose, but chances are they might be in front of my SUV. That never ends well.

When encountering wildlife, remember you're in their home, so respect them. Give them their space and don't try to control what they're doing. That likely won't end well either. Some are skittish, but others will likely stand their ground.

The number one rule of camping in the woods is controlling your trash. If you hang a bag off a tree and fill it with uneaten steak, bacon fat, and other aromatic treats, chances are better that you'll attract one or two of these animals to your site.

Don't feed the animals. Maine is not a giant petting zoo, and the animals will not like it if you try to interact with them. Plus, if you get one to take food from your hand, you may pull back fewer fingers than you started with.

Selfies With Maine Wildlife is Never a Good Idea

I can't believe I'm adding this one, but it's important to note: don't try to get closer to deer, moose, or any other wild animal to snap a selfie. The animal doesn't know what you're doing and will feel threatened.

Just remember to give them their space, stop if they walk in front of your car, and be ready with a phone or camera to snap pictures (from a safe distance) if you happen upon some of Maine's beautiful wildlife.
