Realistically, the impact of a nuclear conflict would be widespread and devastating, and the assumption that those with access to the 'big red buttons' would act with restraint may not always hold true. Recent years have taught us to be cautious and prioritize safety.

While it's crucial to acknowledge that no place would be entirely safe in the event of a nuclear war in the United States, a study by 24/7 Wall St. offers a somewhat reassuring perspective for Maine. The study indicates that Maine doesn't fall under the category of the 'worst places to be' in the event of a nuclear attack on America. Interestingly, this holds true for the entire New England region, which appears to lack any primary targets.

We're not necessarily saying 'Bring it on,' but it's a little bit of a sigh of relief, right?

To determine the worst places in case of a nuclear attack, 24/7 Wall St. devised an index using various measures, considering factors such as population density, emergency preparedness, economic significance, city plans for emergencies, distance to strategic military targets, proximity to nuclear power plants, and ease of evacuation based on commute time as an indicator of congestion and the percentage of the city area that is water.

Clearly, our neck of the woods seems to be well-prepared.

The closest identified targets to us are New York City, followed by Washington D.C. So, while our immediate area may not be a primary target, major cities are still in relatively close proximity.
