All I can say is… I must go… soon!

So I’m lying in bed scrolling TikTok, and I come across something that seemed right up my alley. I stopped scrolling to watch and thought, “What is this place?”

Have you heard about The Candy Bar in Laconia, New Hampshire? Because this is one of those places that sounds made up until you actually go.

The Candy Bar in Laconia, New Hampshire

I immediately did a deep dive on TikTok and Google.

The Candy Bar is exactly what it claims to be: it’s a candy shop. Bright jars. Old-school sweets. The kind of place that instantly makes you feel like a kid again, even if you swear you’re “just looking.”

It's right next to the historic Colonial Theatre, which already gives the whole block this time-capsule feel. This building has stories.

Apparently, back in the 1920s, locals whispered that behind what looked like a totally normal candy shop was a hidden speakeasy, according to The Candy Bar's website.  By day, it was sweets and soda. By night? If you knew the trick, slipping past a Coca-Cola machine disguised as a door to another experience.

Jazz, cocktails, and all the forbidden fun of Prohibition-era Laconia. Then one night, it all disappeared.

I read on the business' website that it may have been a raid or maybe a betrayal. Maybe something no one ever fully explained. The entrance was sealed, and the stories turned into rumor.

Fast forward to now, and here’s where it gets interesting in the best way.

The Candy Bar staff said that they have noticed little things. There are stories of candy jars rattling on their own. The smell of popcorn when no one’s popped any. Crazy right?

Some repairs were being done in the basement when an old photo was found, according to The Candy Bar's website, a photo of a girl named Maggie Doyle.

I read on the site that Maggie worked the concession stand at the Colonial Theatre in the 1940s. Now? Well, some believe that she never really left.

So if you get that feeling that you’re in an episode of Ghost Hunters and have a feeling you can’t quite explain, it’s cool. That’s probably just Maggie.

And after dark? The place comes alive. The speakeasy opens up. They have live music on the weekends. This is my vibe: a place to just relax, enjoy and lose track of time. So, yeah.

That’s The Candy Bar. Come for the candy. Stay for the cocktails. And if history taps you on the shoulder while you’re there… just smile. You’re in on the secret now.
