In an amazing comeback win in overtime, the United States women's ice hockey team defeated Canada 2-1 on Thursday, February 19, earning them the gold medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Not only is that an incredible feat, but it also marks the first gold medal in these winter games for a New England athlete.

Both Alex Carpenter of North Reading, Massachusetts, and Caroline Harvey of Salem, New Hampshire, got to celebrate victory on the ice, and New Englanders can now celebrate with them.

Who Is the First New Englander to Win a Gold Medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics?

While Ben Ogden was the first New Englander to win a silver medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics, it would take nine more days before a New England athlete would take gold.

Carpenter, a forward, and Harvey, a defender, would help the women's ice hockey team take the title from Canada in the final game on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Carpenter also had notable moments throughout the games, including scoring Team USA's first goal of the tournament.
