Why It’s Time to Buy Your Green Light Bulb for Your Porch or Outdoor Light in New England

It is almost the time of year to get out your green light bulbs and display them on your front porch.

"What the heck are you talking about?" That is probably what you are thinking. Don't worry, I'll catch you up to speed.

You might start seeing your neighbors change their front light bulbs from white to green, beginning now through May, in support of Operation Green Light.

Operation Green Light has one simple message, "By shining a green light, county governments and our residents will let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported," according to a National Association of Counties article.

This recognition and tradition is relatively new, starting in New York in 2021. So if you have not heard of it, do not be too hard on yourself. But this Memorial Day (really all through the month of May) is the perfect time to start this tradition.

When it originated, Operation Green Light was geared towards one week leading up to Veterans Day in November, according to the NAC. Now, however, people have been putting out their green lights leading up to and including Memorial Day to recognize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

I have even seen people leave their green light on their porches year-round to show support for the troops.

At any rate, I have seen this new tradition of putting out green lights grow in New England over the years. I want to see more growth. I want to help participate and encourage my neighbors to join in and support too.

As we head into May, I hope the streets of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire will glow green in support, love, and gratitude for our troops.
