Castle in the Clouds is part of the Lucknow Estate in Moultonborough, New Hampshire and an absolute must-see for anyone visiting New Hampshire.

Here are 7 secrets about the property that you may not have known.

This Stunning NH Property in the Lakes Region His Rich History

At the turn of the 20th Century, Tom Plant, who had made his fortune in the shoe industry, built this incredible country estate with his wife, Olive.  If the walls of this magnificent mansion could talk, it would want you to know these 7 secrets, according to Castle in the Clouds.

1. President Eisenhower Was Denied a Stay at the Mansion

After the original owners passed away, the Lucknow was purchased by the Tobey Family who summered at the property for years.  Mrs Susan Tobey was said to love the property so much that she would not lend it to President Eisenhower as his Summer retreat.  She wanted her family to enjoy it.  Smart lady.

2. Lucknow Has a Man-Made Lake and a Boathouse on Winnipesaukee

The original owners, who named the property Lucknow, built a man-made lake, but they also built a boathouse, with all the accoutrements, on Lake Winnipesaukee.  Maybe they were forward thinkers who knew Winni would be crowded as all heck, but they still had their boat house.

3. The Mansion Was Made by Bath, Maine Craftsmen

The original owner, Thomas Plant, was born in Bath, Maine and in 1924 he said this about the property:

The oak woodwork (hand-hewn), which comprises a large part of the outside structure, was made by old-time craftsmen in the shipyards at Bath, Maine. These men are skilled in the shaping and fastening together of ship timbers with oaken dowels, work that lasts a lifetime.

4. 16 Room Arts & Crafts Mansion

When the property was built in 1913-1914, the original owners specifically wanted the "arts & crafts" style.  During the early 20th century, the arts and crafts movement was a reaction toward mass-industry that had lost the hand-made craft.  Visitors are treated to hand made architecture throughout the property.

5. Tripadvisor Gives This NH Property Rave Reviews

You can check them out for yourself here.  The comments made by visitors include the impressive, stunning views and the technology of the house at a time when it was not common at all like, an ice maker for the kitchen.

6. Castle in the Clouds is Historically Significant

The property was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, according to whichmuseum.com for the rich history of New England, the technology of the time it was built and the architecture.

7. Castle in the Clouds Once Fell Into Foreclosure

The original owners had a habit of overspending, coupled with some bad investments.  The Plants needed money and began to mortgage parcels of land and eventually decided to sell the property.  Thank Goodness that the property is now maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust and the Castle Preservation Society to ensure it's beauty for years to come.
