From the second I asked, “Is this seat taken?” you welcomed me with open arms. In a world that feels chaotic and hyper-focused on busy schedules (more often than we’d like to admit), sometimes a small act of kindness is all it takes to shake us from that ceaseless, exhausting cycle.

My original plan was simple: enjoy some Italian food for a “mom’s night out.” And yes, I was riding solo.

I’m always eager to try new restaurants, and I could tell by how packed it was that The Rosa in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, that I clearly made a good choice.

Luckily, I spotted one open seat at the bar. After asking you both, and the gentleman to my right, if it was free, you answered without hesitation, “It’s yours! Have a seat!”

I came to The Rosa, alone, hoping to quiet my thoughts and indulge in carbonara and Cabernet. As I sat on the stool and glanced around, I realized I was surrounded by couples- clinking glasses and sharing loving conversations. And yet, you embraced me without hesitation. Almost as if we’d done this countless times before.

It was a gift getting to hear your history together (47 years, to be exact) and learning that the secret to staying together so long is simply “laughter.” I couldn’t believe it when you told me you both volunteer at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre, taking tickets and handing out programs. I’ve been a theatre girl since I was 15 years old, so I always cherish any conversation that speaks to its effervescent spirit.

Then, to my surprise, you had seen the Seacoast Rep’s production of "Macbeth," the very one starring my best friend, Nick Wakely. It humbled me beyond words that you were so moved and so vocal about his incredible performance.

I just want to say thank you for the conversation. On a night that I was dining alone, you didn’t hesitate to make me feel included. I will cherish our exchange and look forward to the next one.

The world has a beautiful way of connecting us with the people we need in certain moments. And in that moment, I was reminded that true love is possible and that it is, in fact, everlasting, if you water it with laughter.
