Car dealership owner and philanthropist Paul J. Holloway, Jr. died in his sleep Tuesday morning at the age of 84.

Holloway built his auto dealership business from a single dealership in Exeter in 1967 into the Holloway Automotive Group with 13 locations. He was also a partner in a chain of nursing and retirement homes, an air cargo business, and the Wentworth by the Sea Marina.

“For those of us lucky enough to have worked closely with him for years, Paul was more than a role model, he was a beacon lighting the way for all of us to follow. He was never afraid to be the tip of the spear fighting for issues that were important to industry and him and his family.” Dan Bennett, President of the New Hampshire Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement.

A graduate of Temple University, Holloway believed in applying his business skills to philanthropic endeavors. He recently made a $1 million gift to the Foundation for New Hampshire Community Colleges in order to create an endowed scholarship for students enrolled at any of the state’s seven community colleges. Holloway served on the Board of the University System of New Hampshire for 18 years, and the Community College System of NH since 2003.

"We are deeply saddened by the news that our dear friend, Paul Holloway, has passed. Paul's service to this state, including his tireless advocacy for students seeking opportunities for postsecondary education, has been extraordinary. Our thoughts are with the Holloway family," the CCSNH said in a tweet.

"I befriended Paul through our shared vision of the NH Community College System. He gave so much to the Granite State — he will be deeply missed," former state Sen. Tom Sherman said in a tweet.

Holloway Commons at UNH was named in recognition of his significant contributions, along with Holloway Hall at Keene State College, Holloway Auditorium at Plymouth State University, and the Paul J. Holloway Student Success Center at Great Bay Community College.

The Holloway family said contributions in his names can be made to Little Harbor Charitable Foundation, PO Box 2093, New Castle, New Hampshire, 03854. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, and the family is asking for privacy.
