A Massachusetts man drowned and another person was rescued in the heavy surf off Hampton Beach Tuesday night.

A Good Samaritan who called 911 around 7:30 p.m. said he was able to bring one person yelling for help back to shore, but could not reach the other. He was later identified as Luis Colon-De-Lara, 28, of Lawrence, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Hampton Fire and Rescue found the second person in the water, Wandy Bethancourt-Adames, 27, of Lawrence, and administered CPR. He later died at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

The water has been rough since last week because of tropical activity, including the former hurricanes Franklin and Idalia. Hampton Lifeguard Chief Patrick Murphy told WMUR his team responded to 37 rescue calls on Sunday.

Lifeguards will be on duty at Hampton Beach through at least Monday. The annual Hampton Beach Seafood Festival is scheduled for Friday through Sunday.
