Nurse From Strafford County Kidnapped While Working in Haiti

A former Stafford County resident and her child were kidnapped in Haiti Thursday, according to the organization El Roi Haiti.

The group confirmed on its website that Alix Dorsainvil, the wife of its director, was kidnapped Thursday morning from its campus near Port au Prince. She was the group's school and community nurse. Eli Roi says it provides a Christian education at its academy, which has an enrollment of 390, according to its website.

"Alix is a deeply compassionate and loving person who considers Haiti her home and the Haitian people her friends and family. Alix has worked tirelessly as our school and community nurse to bring relief to those who are suffering as she loves and serves the people of Haiti in the name of Jesus," the group wrote on its website.

A friend of Dorsainvil told WMUR she is from Middleton, New Hampshire, and was kidnapped with her daughter.

State Department 'aware' of kidnapping

The U.S. State Department said in a statement to the Associated Press it is aware of the kidnapping of two citizens in Haiti, and is in contact with Haitian authorities.

A "do not travel" travel advisory was issued by the State Department Thursday due to "kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure." Family members of U.S. government employees, non-emergency U.S. government employees, and U.S. citizens were advised to leave the country as soon as possible.

Dorsainvil was a graduate of Regis College in Massachusetts and told WMUR they will hold a meeting for the campus community during the coming week.
