Maura Healey: Mass. Gubernatorial Candidate is NH Raised
Attorney General Maura Healey is running for governor in Massachusetts, but was raised in Hampton Falls and graduated from Winnacunnet High School.
Healey, a Democrat, has held office since 2015 and is the first openly gay state attorney general in the country. She confirmed her intention Thursday to run for governor in 2022.
She makes no effort to hide her New Hampshire roots, which go back to 1972 when her family moved to the Seacoast after being stationed in the DC area where she was born.
The video announcing Healey's candidacy includes shots of her mom (a nurse at the Lincoln Akerman School), and Healey in her Winnacunnet Warriors basketball jersey. Her stepfather was a Winnacunnet girls sports coach and history teacher.
Wearing her jersey, Healey returned to Winnacunnet High School in Feb. 2016 to host a Hillary Clinton presidential campaign rally, according to Mass Live. There, she talked about the hustle, determination and grit that is part of the "Winnacunnet Way."
Healey is one of four Democratic candidates who have declared their candidacy for the primary. She'll face Danielle Allen, a political science professor at Harvard University, state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, and Orlando Silva, the owners of Pro Duct Cleaning Company.
Incumbent Charlie Baker has said that he will not run for re-election.
