The Newburyport Fire Department's marine unit was found partially submerged late early Friday morning, but how it got that way is a mystery.

A pedestrian was first to notice Newburyport Marine 1 leaning to the left while docked at Cashman Park, according to Fire Chief Christopher J. LeClaire and City Marshal Mark Murray. An attempt was made to raise the boat during low tide on Friday morning.

The 2007 MetalCraft Marine FireStorm 30 High Speed Aluminum Fireboat was acquired in 2020 from the Portsmouth Fire Department.

It was used Thursday for training on the Merrimack River, and no malfunctions were noted by firefighters on board.  It was also used during the recent search for 6-year-old Mas DeChhat of Lowell after he fell into the river.

The boat is named the Raven II after Newburyport firefighters Tony Raven, who died while fighting a fire on Chapel Street in 2016.
