Authorities are calling it a "bad accident."

According to WGME News 13, tragic news hit Newport, New Hampshire Monday morning.  A two and a half year-old girl was found outside of a house in the middle of the recent cold snap. Police are currently conducting an investigation.  Newport Police Chief Jim Burroughs tells told Valley News the girl may have left the Maple Street house overnight Monday and then couldn't get back in. A neighbor said he woke up around 4 a.m. to the sound of a child crying, but didn't see anything. He said he and his girlfriend then found the girl about 7 a.m. at the bottom of a set of stairs off a screened-in porch in a back apartment.

The cold snap which has ripped through the Granite State shot temperatures to the single digits in most places, and below zero in others. The Valley News reported two adults and two children live in the apartment.
