5 Reasons I Can’t Wait for the Portsmouth Gas Light to Reopen

A four-alarm fire took out one of the best spots in Downtown Portsmouth, but it looks like they will be open for business once again in late spring.

The Portsmouth Gas Light Co. is set to open again in late spring after a major fire forced the popular destination to close. This go-to tavern/pizzeria/nightclub has been sorely missed by people like me who live on The New Hampshire Seacoast and love the nightlife.

Don't get me wrong. There are still plenty of amazing destinations to find great food and drinks in the area. The Gas Light was just in my top ten places to hit on a weekend with friends, or a date night, and I really miss it.

What makes The Portsmouth Gas Light Co. so great? Well I just so happen to have a handy list of reasons why I cannot wait for it to come back.

1. We want to eat all of this delicious food again

It is no secret that the Portsmouth Gas Light Co. has some amazing dining options whether you want a quick bite or an upscale meal. I love how they focus those options between the main dining area and the pizza pub downstairs. You can either head down for a delicious "Congress St. Pizza" with your friends or sit down with a date for Tuna Steak at street level.

2. The beer stock market makes buying a beer fun

This place has great drinks to go along with their menu, but they also add on another twist for those looking for some booze. They have a "Beer Stock Market" in the Gaslight Pizza Pub that changes the price of beer every few minutes depending on demand. Personally, I'm a big fan of their "Grey Goose Monster Mary" that fills a big bottle of Grey Goose vodka with everything you want in a bloody mary.

3. We need that nightclub upstairs back in action

You can never have too many places to get your groove on, and The Gas Light had a great nightclub scene. Sure you can go to a place like Thirsty Moose or Fat Belly's to bust out some moves, but having another option is always nice in case things are too crowded. The weather is getting warmer and I am going to be in the mood to move around a bit more. Speaking of which...

4. Outdoor dining season is just around the corner

There is nothing better than sitting on a deck with a cold beer on a sunny day. Spring will be here before we know it and the weather is coming with it. The Gas Light's deck has always been a solid spot for experiencing some good times in the outdoors. A good option for when you want to sit outside, but also are tired of looking out at the ocean.

5. The Gas Light Co. (and its employees) are a staple community

The business community in Portsmouth is very close and looks out for one another. Local businesses gave out free food to displaced employees, found them positions during reconstruction and helped raise funds to assist them. People in the area love seeing a great business continue to succeed, and that fire will not get in the way of Gas Light's continued influence in the area. I know I will be among the first wave of fans flocking back when it opens this year for some food, drinks and shenanigans.
