Mara's contract is due to expire in July

Due to recent lawsuits filed against the City of Portsmouth (all of which are too complicated to explain but you can read about in detail HERE) the status of hiring a permanent Police Chief for the city sits in limbo.

David Mara came to Portsmouth to serve as an interim Chief until a permanent successor was to be named.  Mara most recently served as the Manchester Police Cheif before retiring in 2015.

Recently, the Union Leader quoted City Commissioner Joe Plaia as saying that "sworn and unsworn members of the police department would like to see Mara stay on board as the permanent chief."

Because Mara is retired, he's only allowed to work 32 hours.

The good news is that the public can wrigh in on whether or not Mara's contract should be extended at a commission meeting scheduled for May 10th.  Get full details HERE
