Designer of Vegas’ Welcome Sign Dies at 91; RIP Betty Willis
This is without a doubt the greatest welcome sign in the entire world. Just seeing it makes me want a whiskey on the rocks and a two team parlay. It's designer, Betty Willis passed away at age 91 on Sunday and her story was 'Fabulous' as well.
She was born in 1923, a full eight years before gambling was even legalized in Vegas. She was a Vegas local, born in nearby Overton and returned to The Sin City area after some years as an artist in LA.
Here are some Las Vegas sign facts from 'right off the top of my head'.
A BRIGHT SHINY WELCOME
If you look closely at the 'WELCOME' circles, they are replicas of Liberty Silver Dollars.
THERE ARE THREE OF THESE SIGNS IN VEGAS
There is one just outside 'The Downtown' of Vegas and also one on Boulder Highway, (my true home away from home.)
THE BACK OF THE SIGN HAS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MESSAGE
It simply reads, "Drive Carefully, Come Back Soon". Thanks with the help of the artistry of Betty Willis, I have done that very thing 21 times now. May she rest in peace.
