It's always the fun part of the restaurant experience. Do I tip 15%, 20%..and now I have to do math with a buzz on?

More importantly, why do I have to pay the establishments employees? That shouldn't be my responsibility. I can't think of too many industries where this is common practice.

As the video shows, tipping is a relatively new practice in the hospitality industry. A practice that started out as a bribe for good service centuries ago, turned into a standard business practice during Prohibition as a way for employers to pay their employees less.

Like most people who have worked in the hospitality business, I factor my empathy in when calculating the tip. But perhaps it's time to do away with that practice.
