If you normally run behind schedule, relax. You have an extra second today.

There will be a "leap second" added at midnight June 30. These leap seconds are added to keep the atomic clock in sync with the rotation of the earth.

The earth has an inconsistent speed, and because of that, an atomic clock was created by scientists in the 1950's to keep precise time. But as the rotation speed of the earth sped up and slowed down, the clock got out of sync.

So the scientists add an extra second every 10 years or so to keep the clock and the earth's rotation closer together.

Apparently if this didn't happen, your GPS would be a little off, and some other things that I don't understand very well might happen. I do know that some computers might take issue with this process, so be forewarned.
