The submarine gets a new basin, and the park gets a new name.

Ever since the USS Albacore was moved to it's current home in 1985, it was sitting in an unfinished basin that was made up of water, dirt and boulders. Not the prettiest of sites, nor good for the structure.

It sounds odd that it wouldn't be good for a submarine to be in sitting water, but that is the case. Water would find it's way into the structure, as would animals. The sub also began to rust in places on the outside.

That has all changed after a recently completed renovation project. The basin has a new drainage system, the sub has a new state-of-the-art pump, and the entire area has been newly landscaped.

The park also has a new name, the USS Albacore Submarine and Museum.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 4th at 11am.

The museum’s annual Memorial Day observance will be held Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m., with members of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as well as the long honored tradition of the ringing of the bell for each submarine lost by accident or in combat during the country’s wars.
