Yogi's popularity transcended even the die-hard Yankee haters.

Yogi was an All-Star fifteen times. He was a 3 time MVP award winner. He played, coached or managed in 21 World Series and won 13 of them, including 5 in a row from 1949-53. He called the only 'perfect game' thrown in World Series' history.

But what was probably most beloved about Yogi was his way with the English language. Here are some of my favorite Yogi-isms:

  • While commenting on baseball: "90% of the game mental. The other half is physical."
  • On being a guest of honor at a banquet: "Thank you for making this day necessary."
  • When asked about his NY Mets chance to come back from 9 1/2 games out in July: "It ain't over 'till it's over"
  • "You can observe a lot by watching"
  • "When you come to a fork in the road, take it"
  • On why he didn't frequent his favorite restaurant anymore: "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."
  • "Always go to other people's funerals otherwise they might not go to yours."
  • When asked about all his sayings: "I didn't say half the things I said"

RIP Yogi. Truly a one-of-a-kind.
