Some may say that this is the most New Hampshire accident ever.

Two cars hit a moose on the highway and it called for the road to be closed.  I would agree with "the most NH accident story ever," but not between Manchester and the Seacoast.  Maybe Coos county, but not in Candia.

A Moose on the Loose in Candia, NH Causes Big Accident

On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, police were called to a scene on Route 101 in Candia.  Not Pittsburg or Dummer, (yes, there's a town called Dummer in the 603) but Candia.  Two cars had hit the same moose trying to cross the highway.  One car was going Westbound and the other going Eastbound.  One of the drivers was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital, but the other driver was not.

Both cars, one a Mazda 3 and the other a Kia Sportage, had to be towed because of all the damage.

The moose did not survive.

Recently, the Keene, NH PD had to chase a moose off of the roadway safely into the woods to avoid a similar situation.

Wildlife in New Hampshire is Very Active in the Fall

Some may say that Winter is the most dangerous times to drive in the Winter.  I would say it's the Spring and Fall.  That's when the Wildlife are most active.  Usually, you will get a deer that decides to LITERALLY RUN RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR CAR, but this Moose activity is new, at least for me.

In the Spring and Fall, wildlife are either waking up or getting ready to go to sleep, so drivers have to be extra cautious.  Not only is it dangerous for yourself, but if you do hit an animal, you have the added guilt to go with it.

You definitely don't want to be behind me going down a country road at 4:30 a.m. in the Fall or Spring.  Watch out for the birds too.  Those bad boys are getting more courageous as the years go on.
