Columbus Day Could Soon Become Indigenous Peoples Day in New Hampshire

If some New Hampshire lawmakers get their way, Columbus Day could soon be renamed 'Indigenous Peoples Day' here in the Granite State.

An article from WMUR say State Representative Tim Horrigan, a democrat from Durham is helping in leading the charge to rename the October holiday. He told WMUR:

"I certainly don't think having his name on a holiday is appropriate," Horrigan said. "He doesn't belong up there with (George) Washington or Martin Luther King."

Some, believe honoring Christopher Columbus, a 15-century explorer is not correct due to his treatment of native people. The issue came up for discussion last year, but failed to move forward when the House was controlled by the Republicans. However, now with a Democrat controlled House, it is a possibility there could be enough votes to approve a bill and move it forward.
