The overnight shift turned dangerous when five people robbed an Exeter gas station at gunpoint early Tuesday morning.

The group entered the EZ Mart Shell station on Main Street around 3:25 a.m. and walked around the store before one pulled out a handgun and the other what looked like an AR-15-type weapon from his waistband, according to Exeter Police Chief Stephan R. Poulin.

They allegedly took an undetermined amount of case and merchandise from the store before running off on foot east on Main Street. It's not known if the group had a vehicle.

No shots were fired during the robbery, and the cashier was not hurt.

“We would like to commend the clerk for the way he handled this very stressful encounter when he was confronted with multiple firearms. He didn't panic and did exactly what was asked," Poulin said.

Main Street was closed for about two hours from Cass Street to Lincoln Street during an investigation. A State Police K9 and helicopter was used during the search for suspects, who have not been found.

A nearby home was searched but was determined not to be involved, according to Poulin.

Exeter Police released images from store surveillance video of the five suspects and are looking for additional footage. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Exeter Police at 603-772-1212.
