For 104 years, Gilley's was a cash-only business. Now everyone's favorite late-night eating destination is accepting the plastic.

Before attending last night's cruise for our sister station (102.1/105.3 The Shark,) I decided to take a walk into town and grab a quick bite an old stopping point from my younger days of bar hopping in Portsmouth- Gilley's Diner!

On the way there I made my usual stop to an ATM, knowing in advance that Gilley's is well- known for accepting only cash.

When I arrived and placed my order (a burger and cheese fries.....don't judge me) I was pleasantly surprised to see that Gilley's now accepts the major credit cards as a form of payment!  They even accept the Square app!

Gilley's has a long history in New England, according to their website:

"The Gilley's Lunch cart was built in 1940 by the Worcester Diner Co. of Worcester, MA. This diner is one, of just five that were built, and is the only one remaining in full operation today. [...] The wing added to Gilley's in May 1996 combined the diner with its former separate storage trailer. The additional storage and refrigeration facilities enabled Gilley's to expand its menu, improve safety, security, and provide better service to you, our customer."

Gone are the days of counting your $1's at 1:30 AM in a blur outside Poco's or Fat Belly's. Gilley's now accepts credit cards and it is even easier for me to get this cheeseburger and hotdog combo.
