3 Unwritten Rules About Portland, Maine, That Mainers Just Know
What is Maine best known for?
If you don't finish a sentence with 'bub' or go 'upta-camp' on the weekends are you really even from Maine? The answer is unapologetically no, and your answer is also sprinkled with a little 'no way guy'.
Maine Accents
1. Not one single person can determine what a Maine accent sounds like unless you're from here and you just kinda get it.
It's almost like it has its' own secret sound or something it's wild but you know exactly what I'm talking about don't you.
Even right now, if you're reading this and you don't live in Maine, you have zero idea what I'm talking about.
2. Nobody asks for help, it's just given and you must accept it. Broken down on the side of the road? It's cool.
Though it has potential to be super dangerous, most people will stop and help you immediately. Screw stranger danger, that doesn't apply in our state.
3. Ferry etiquette. Since we live on the ocean surrounded by tons of awesome islands like Peaks or Great Diamond, hopping a ferry is just a typical day.
Everyone piles on at once, but you gotta read the room.
If there's open seats always use the 1 for 1 rule. Locals just know that this means you should always allow an empty seat in-between you and another passenger (if you can help it).
Ferry etiquette. Things only Mainer's understand without having to read it on a rule sheet.
