As prices escalate and salaries do not rise comparably, it's more and more difficult to find suitable housing in some areas of the country.  It's not just goods and products caught up in the inflationary cycle, but housing.

Basic needs like food and housing shouldn't be so expensive, but some places are more cost-prohibitive than others.

According to cashnetusa.com, paying an affordable amount for rent is a top concern for many in the USA.  The site says,

For over 40 years, U.S. housing authorities have defined affordable housing as that which costs 30% or less of the inhabitant’s income. It’s a figure that experts still recommend.

However for the first time in 20 years, many are paying more than 30% for their housing, in part due to the very low number of properties for sale (and even lower amount of apartments available).

The best places to find an apartment are cities with higher salaries to match the above average rental costs.  There are few in the Northeast, with the exception of Hartford, Connecticut, which has the highest number of rental in step with generally higher salaries.

Hartford, Connecticut, ranked #1 for highest appropriation of affordable rentals.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the list are two hot spots in Massachusetts.  Both Cambridge and Boston ranked 2nd and 3rd on the list of least affordable cities to rent in.  The only city higher was #1 ranked Miami.

People in the survey struggled to find affordable rentals in Cambridge and Boston, with both averaging just over 9% of housing available at 30% or under the average salary.  That is a very low number, considering a city like Hartford has almost 97% of housing available within the 30% salary guidelines.

The number are staggering, and point to very limited availability in a world-class city like Boston, which is unfortunate for many.
