Here in New England, we have a lot of names of cities and towns that people find really hard to pronounce.  Sometimes, even if it doesn't look hard, you probably may not be saying it correctly.

For example, Berlin, NH.  If you're not from around here, you would probably pronounce that city like the German one, "burr-LIN."  In fact, the name is actually pronounced, "BURR-lin," accent on the BURR.  Makes a huge difference.

There is one city in New England that baffles people when they first see it's name:  Worcester, Massachusetts.

Yes, the 2nd largest city in New England, Worcester, got the nod from frommer.com.  Here's what they had to say about the city's name:

It looks like there should be three syllables and an “r” sound somewhere in the middle, but looks can be deceiving.

Right.  There are only TWO syllables in Worcester and the correct pronunciation is WUSS-ster.

Although Worcester got the nod from frommers.com, there are plenty of other cities and towns in New England that people can't figure out.  Play this with your friends who are from away.

  • Billerica: Pronounced:  "bill-RICK-ah."
  • Gloucester:  Pronounced:  GLAW-ster
  • Leominster:  Pronounced:  LEM-min-ster
  • Leicester:  Pronounced, I kid you not, "Lester."  Just like the name.
  • Haverhill:  Pronounced, "HAYV-rull."

We always pass through Worcester on the way to our family in Enfield, Connecticut.  I never knew that they had a "restaurant row."  Maybe we'll stop next time.
