Blizzard Meals: What New Hampshire Is Actually Eating During the Winter Storm
Let’s be honest, when the New England weather guy starts throwing around words like blizzard and nor’easter, nobody’s cooking up a five-course masterpiece.
This is survival mode cooking. This is “what do we already have?” energy.
And honestly? We listen, and we don’t judge. Oh, don't even get me started on the panic shopping before the storm. We'll save that for another day.
Pizza... Everybody's Favorite
Somewhere across New Hampshire right now, maybe Portsmouth or Barrington, a frozen pizza is being slid into the oven like it’s the most comforting thing in the world. Because it is.
I know this because I’m one of the ones who’s doing that. Pizza knows its purpose.
Pasta or Ramen
In Manchester or Somersworth, someone is standing in front of the pantry, discovering a box of pasta they don’t even remember buying.
Is it shells? Is it spirals? Is it some random shape that only appears during emergencies? Or the good old standby… Ramen.
Doesn’t matter. Boil it. Add butter. Sprinkle questionable seasoning. Boom: blizzard cuisine.
Cereal for dinner
That is absolutely happening. Capt. Crunch or Fruit Loops. YES! Kids thrilled. Parents exhausted. Bowls clanking while the snow piles up outside.
No cooking, no cleanup, no regrets.
The Side Dish As A Meal
There’s also the “I swear this was supposed to be a side dish” crowd, people eating things like instant mashed potatoes, boxed mac and cheese, or canned soup that’s been in the cabinet since the last storm… or maybe 2017.
If it’s warm and edible, it counts. Right?
Responsibilities and expiration dates go out the window in a nor’easter.
The Comfort Food and Snacks of Choice
Some of us are going full comfort mode, grilled cheese and tomato soup, eggs and toast, or reheating leftovers like they’re brand new. I may have done that about an hour after the pizza from earlier.
Remember… we listen, and we don’t judge, okay?
Others are stress-snacking their way through the storm: handfuls of crackers, random chips, the emergency chocolate you forgot you hid from yourself. I didn’t forget about the chocolate. I was “trying” to wait, but the chocolate kept calling my name.
The Slow Cookers and Grillers
And then there are those who planned: slow cooker chili, a pot of stew, something bubbling away all day while the snow falls outside.
Can you smell it? I can. What time is dinner?
I almost forgot, the die-hard grillers. No matter the snow, the Traeger’s and Big Green Eggs are rollin' smoke with a Boston Butt. We see you. We respect you. I’m that guy, too!
Grilling season is year-round, no matter the weather.
That’s the beauty of blizzard meals. They’re real. They’re messy. They’re comforting. And they tell your story. Your story of survival.
