‘Masshole’, ‘Fo-Shizzle’ Among New Words Added to Oxford English Dictionary
'Massholes' can high-five over another empty achievement. This time instead of a tattoo or beating someone up, they can celebrate their recognition in the Oxford English Dictionary.
That's right. The word 'Masshole' has officially been added to the dictionary.
Masshole (n., 1989): term of contempt for a native or inhabitant of the state of Massachusetts. This is what is known as a blended word, which Lewis Carroll called portmanteaus, naming them after a suitcase that unfolds into two equal parts.
According to the OED, the word dates back to 1989 and cites the following examples of its use: (from Boston.com)
1989 M. Ridley Warts & All iii. 70 “The New Hampshire people have a nickname for the refugees from Massachusetts: Massholes.”
1996 Boston Globe (Electronic ed.) 22 July c5 “They have plenty of company in a state full of so many ‘misunderstood’ drivers that out-of-towners unaffectionately call them ‘Massholes’.”
Almost 500 new words were added this year, among them were:
- twerk
- hot mess
- fo’shizzle
- stanky
- autotune
- FLOTUS
- half-ass
I'm shocked that 'Masshole' is only 26 years old. I would think as long as the word ***hole has been around, so to would the other.
