New England Company Discovers Cancer-Causing Chemical in Acne Products
Many of us can relate to having bad skin, especially in middle and high school. The embarrassment that you feel walking down the hallway of your high school with a big huge zit on your face is the absolute worst, especially if that person you have a crush on is also in the hallway.
There are many products to take care of that for us, but it's been recently reported that a number of acne face products include a cancer-causing chemical in them.
Say what?
A Connecticut Company Discovers Cancer-Causing Chemical
The announcement came at the beginning of March 2024, according to Newsweek.com, that there is a cancer-causing chemical in acne treatments produced and sold under brand names including Clinique, Target, Clearasil, and Proactiv.
The finding was discovered by Valisure, a New Haven Connecticut company.
The chemical is known as benzene, and according to the CDC, it "works by causing cells not to work correctly ... and can cause bone marrow not to produce enough red blood cells, which can lead to anemia."
All this came after potentially unhealthy levels of the chemical were found in sunscreens and dry shampoo, according to the Newsweek report.
Valisure, according to Newsweek, has filed a petition with the FDA to have the products recalled. However, the FDA needs to verify the information as accurate before it recommends it.
The article goes on to say that Valisure tested the stability of the products under increased temperatures of 158 degrees Fahrenheit.

As consumers, we have to be extra careful of what we consume and what we put on our face. There are regulations in place for many products, and we will see if the FDA follows up on the report about these face products and their link to a cancer-causing chemical.
It's very important to look at all the facts before we make decisions on what products to buy.
