WHOA!  This doesn't happen everyday.  I can't imagine how the fishermen must have felt when they saw these incredible humpback whales breach so close to their fishing vessel.  We get a pretty good idea, however, with this video.

According to a report from WMUR, Dale Sprague and Matt Hamilton were out fishing for haddock when they saw two whales breach.  One on one side of the boat, and another on the other side.

The vessel with about 6 or 7 miles off the coast of the Isles of Shoals when all this took place.  At one point, the men saw one of the whales coming directly at them.  At which point, you can hear them say,

This isn't good.  Start the boat.

At that point, the men saw multiple whales, all of which made their boat look very small.  They estimated the whales were approximately 50 feet long, or about 3 times the size of what they were in.

Whales do not breach as a sign of aggression.  I've heard they do this for several reasons, one being just for fun. If I was a whale, I might think it's funny to try to knock off a couple of fishermen out of their boat.  Another reason is that they communicate with other whales by breaching and the WMUR report states they sometimes do this to rid themselves of parasites.

Whatever the reasons why, I am glad that the fishermen are both safe and sound.  From the article, they were afraid that the whales would land on top of their boat and who knows what could have happened.  Because that didn't happen, however, I am so happy for them that they had the opportunity to witness one of the most magical things that can happen in the Atlantic ocean.
