Tim said he was walking a week after the surgery. Here's what he had to say about his operation:
All of a sudden, I am not in the darkness. .... It's going to be the option for people that don't want to be on dialysis, they want to be able to be with their kids and loved ones.
More recently, a 54 year old man from Dover, New Hampshire, Bill Stewart, is doing really well after his pig kidney transplant that took place on June 14, 2025.
It Could Have Taken 7 Years
Bill's high blood pressure caused his kidneys to fail. According to cbsnews.com, it could have taken up to 7 years to find a matching kidney. He said it was an easy decision to apply to be the next recipient after he heard about Tim Andrews success with the same transplant.
Bill talked to Tim about the surgery and decided that if it didn't work, they could take it out and he would go back on dialysis. No necessary as of now, knock on wood and cross your fingers.
Pigs Are Pretty Miraculous
The term for this type of procedure is called an "xenotransplant," meaning the organ going into the human is coming from an animal.
You may have heard of people getting heart valves from pigs before. As a matter of fact, the practice of that has been around for the past 30 years, according to heart-valve-surgery.com. A pig's heart is similar in size, weight and structure of a human heart.
I have also heard that pig's are the very smart. I may never eat a pork chop again after this. What a miraculous animal.
