NH Good Samaritan Has Long Road Back From Serious Injuries

The Good Samaritan who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while trying to help at a crash on the Everett Turnpike on Friday is now in need of help himself.

New Hampshire State Police said a 59-year-old Manchester man parked on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes in Merrimack around 5:45 a.m., and walked across the highway to help at the crash that blocked the left lane between Exit 11 and Exit 12.

The man, identified as Mark Shamaly by his wife Barbara in a GoFundMe page, was struck by a vehicle that went off the right side of the highway and then left the scene.

The impact of the crash threw Shamaly and caused internal injuries including head trauma, a broken shoulder and pelvis, and numerous shattered ribs that punctured his lung, liver, and aorta, according to his wife on the GoFundMe page.

"Good fortune prevailed when a DOT worker who witnessed the accident stopped and helped my husband, literally saving his life," Barbara Shamaly said.

Help With Medical Expenses, Travel

Mark Shamaly will be out of work for an extensive period of time, creating a financial strain as Barabara Shamaly is unable to work due to a medical condition.

"I will be having difficulty keeping up with the medical bills and traveling expenses going back and forth from NH to Boston. I hope you can find it in your heart to make any small donation to help my husband and me through this difficult time," Barara Shamaly wrote.

State Police late Friday night announced the arrest of Jose Enrique Cruz Vasquez, 30, of Manchester as the driver that struck Shamaly. He was charged with reckless conduct with a deadly weapon after an accident.
