When it comes to fall in New England, there is so much to love. Corn mazes, pumpkin patches, u-pick apples, that first cold chill in the air – You'll find these things and much more all over the New England states, but when it comes to what the region is most well-known for, at least when it comes to fall-time, there's no denying the stunning, rich colors of the fall foliage.

As the leaves begin to change, leaf peepers flock to states like Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island to take in the breathtaking views, and boy, is it a sight to see. But just like all good things, there's a perfect time for everything. Even while living in a region known for its beautiful fall foliage, you may find yourself feeling like you're missing out on seeing the best, boldest oranges, yellows and reds there are.

Prepare to miss out no more.

This interactive fall foliage map allows users to track the expected stages of fall foliage across the country throughout September, October and November. Wes Melton, co-founder and CTO of Smoky Mountain, created the map years ago and has continued to publish it annually, allowing avid leaf peepers, and even just casual foliage onlookers, to estimate when the colors may be best in their area.

"Although simply entering rainfall, temperature data, elevations, and other data points into a model will never be 100 percent accurate, this combined with our proprietary, historical data drives our model to become more accurate each year," Melton told Mental Floss back in 2018.

So what can we expect across New England this fall? While some northern areas of Vermont and New Hampshire are already starting to see minimal fall foliage at the beginning of September, we won't begin to see widespread color changes until the end of the month. That aforementioned area of Vermont and New Hampshire will peak by the end of the month, much earlier than the rest of New England, with much of Maine following shortly after. However, the peak for much of states like Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut won't come until mid-October, where foliage colors will be at their most rich.

Whether you're planning on staying near the SouthCoast in the coming months or hoping to plan a trip to another part of New England and watch the leaves in all their glory, start looking ahead now so you know when they'll be at their most beautiful this fall.
