Pan Am Railways and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation notified Newmarket that the major local artery Route 108 will be closed Dec. 7 and 8 to perform emergency repairs to the railroad crossing.

Pan Am is replacing a track panel necessary for Amtrak's Downeaster to travel at normal speeds.

Route 108 will close Wednesday at 6 a.m. and will reopen when finished, which is expected late Thursday.

Passenger traffic will be detoured down New Road and truck traffic will be detoured to Hersey Lane, Grant Road to Route 152 to Route 108.

Vehicles who don't need to be in the immediate area are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
