A lot of us are totally cool with eating dead animals. We just don't necessarily want to bond with the chicken or pig that is going to eventually be on our dinner plate.

According to Fosters, a Stratham farm is taking a different approach: This year, Saltonstall Farm (located at 61 Stratham Heights Road) is giving 23 families the opportunity to slaughter their own turkey for Thanksgiving.

It's like picking your own blueberries, just a lot more violent.

Kyle Saltonstall co-owns the farm with his wife Sophie, according to Fosters, and this is their second year of selling live turkeys at $5 a pound for Thanksgiving.

This is a little more expensive than buying your bird at Market Basket. But with this price they allow families to use the farm's slaughtering facilities if they'd like.

Kyle will guide them on how to humanely kill their bird and prepare it for the big day, the news article states. It's a full farm-to-table experience!

The article explains that since this is their second year doing this, there is a system in place. Families who choose to participate with come to the farm the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

This year the appointments are scheduled in 15 minute increments to allow social distancing, according to Fosters, and apparently, there are many repeat customers who also participated last year!

Kyle told Fosters that people like to make a personal connection to the animal that will be such a sacred part of their holiday meal.

I think this whole experience might make me want to be vegetarian, but I won't knock it until I try it. I think there is something to be said for knowing exactly where your food comes from.

Kyle and Sophie's goal is to cultivate more understanding and compassion in the community around how meat is produced, the news article noted.

Will you be trying it?
