Your odds are better that you'd be eaten whole by a shark than win Powerball, but here are a couple of tips.

There are plenty of math folks who say the odds of winning are more than one in 292 million. In fact, Jeffrey Miecznikowski, a statistical expert from the University at Buffalo, says "that's like flipping a quarter and getting heads 28 times in a row".

Letting the computer pick the numbers is the way to go, because people who rely on birthdays and anniversaries as numbers aren't likely to choose numbers higher than the thirties. Remember, there are 69 numbered in the tank.

Buying extra tickets with a jackpot this large doesn't improve the odds. It would cost you $584 million to buy all the possible number combinations, in case you're thinking of taking that route.

And if you go in with a bunch of people, that road is fraught with troubles. Say goodbye to all of those friendships, even if your tickets won just $4.

Just buy your tickets alone, and spend all day daydreaming.
