This Hidden New Hampshire Horse Graveyard Has a Haunting History
We live in an old part of the country. New England really isn't new at all. As everyone knows, this is where the Pilgrims first settled and the Colonists went from this part of the Country, out to the West.
RELATED TO THIS STORY: Why This NH Town is Voted the 'Most Charming'
As the area progressed and New Hampshire was going to pave Route 93, they found a horse cemetery that no one knew was there, according to a report from WCVB.
In doing an article about the Town of Littleton, I found out that there was a horse cemetery in that town. Not only did not know about that, I had no idea that New Hampshire had a graveyard specifically for horses, but we do.
The Wallace Horse Cemetery Was Established in 1919
As the story goes, Mollie, Maude and Maggie were the horses of Myra and Eli Wallace who owned a print shop in Littleton. They loved these horses and treated them like their children. The couple wouldn't go anywhere without them. The story takes a bit of a macabre turn when Myra became sick.
When Myra passed away in 1919, she had the three horses put down and they were buried with their blankets, bits, everything they had in this world, they took to the next.
The report doesn't say why Myra put the horses down when she passed, I can only guess. Maybe no one had the means to take care of the animals. The Wallace family sounded like they were well to do and maybe there was no one else that could. Maybe Myra couldn't bear to go to "the other side" without her beloved horses. One will never know.
I had no idea this place even existed. Here's more New Hampshire trivia for you.
