A quick drive down into Western Massachusetts is worthwhile each September for The Big E just outside Springfield and incorporating all the New England states.

This year (for the first time in over a decade) some friends from the North are performing. From September 27-29, it's the Royal Canadian Mounties.

Actual Canadian police officers, 32 horses and their "mounted" officers will run through cavalry exercises choreographed to music for a delight of sight and sound, according to The Big E website.

The tradition and the distinctive red uniforms harken back to the late 1800s and will be presented to the public for free in the Eastern States Exposition Coliseum on the Big E fair grounds.
