A Portsmouth police officer saved a child's birthday by paying for stolen cake ingredients instead of arresting the mother.

According to SeacoastOnline, Officer Michael Kotsonis was called to a store about a woman shoplifting and after an investigation learned that the woman had stolen cake ingredients to make for her child's birthday.

Instead of arresting the mother, Officer Kotsonis took the items back to the store and paid for them. The officer was quoted in the article as saying:

I'm not going to take away a kid's birthday cake. I ended up bringing it back to the mother.

Kotsonis reminds us that this isn't random, and that police officers do similar things all the time.

Although Officer Kotsonis' intention was not for publicity, it's good that this story is getting out. Police Officers have a certain stigma nowadays and it's good to see there are plenty of good ones serving their community and protecting us.
