16 years old is still too young to get married in NH..... or anywhere for that matter.

I am thankful that Governor Sununu raised the legal age for KIDS to get married from 14 to 16, according to a story from WMUR.  In my opinion, 14, 15, 16 years old - you're still a CHILD.  I'm sorry if you are reading this and you happen to BE that age, but you're too young to get married.  I don't want to make you feel at all defensive or bad about any feelings you might have because, again, you are still a kid.  Sorry, but I guess this one hit a nerve.

When I was 19 years old, I went to my mother and told her I was getting married.  Although I was out of the house and on my own at that time, I was 19. years. old.  WAAAY too young to get married.  I know there's a difference between 16 & 19, but I really didn't know about life at all yet.  My Mother, being very old fashioned, approved and was happy that her youngest daughter was getting married to a man (boy, also 19) who she knew and liked.

I believe that everything happens for a reason and the path that you take is the one you are meant to travel on, however, sometimes I wish that my dear, sweet Mother would have just sat me down and talked to me more about it.  I was so very young and to this day I want to see the world, meet people and experience all I can before I have to go to the "great wide open," you know?

Apologies about the rant, however, the recent story about the age of marriage here in NH really got me thinking about all the decisions that I made on my own as a very young person.  As it turned out, my first husband gave me my son, Colin and for that, I will be forever grateful.

If you are thinking of getting married at 16, for the love of Mike and all that is Holy, email me.  I'll talk it out with you.  sarah.sullivan@townsquaremedia.com
