America’s New No. 1 Supermarket Has Only 3 Locations in New Hampshire
More and more, people are shopping online, including food shopping. Grocery stores are competing with each other for the same dollar. According to the latest survey two grocery stores tied for first place.
Many people here in New England might say Market Basket, but that's not what this survey said.
Trader Joe's is tied with Publix for the number one spot.
In 2024, Costco was the number one Supermarket.

In 2025, America picked Publix and Trader Joe's for a tie at the Top Spot, according to ACSI.com.
What Makes America Love One Supermarket Over Another?
Here are some of the metrics that ACSI used:
- Convenience of store hours: I get this one. Trader Joe's opens at 8am, which seems early to most, but I would prefer 4am, thank you very much.
- Ease of Pickup process: I have yet to try the online order and pick up, so this one doesn't matter to me, but if I did, I would want the process to be easy.
- Quality of Mobile App: We really are a digital society. The app has to be easy to navigate.
- Ability to provide brand names: Trader Joe's, tied for first place with Publix for America's favorite, only carries Trader Joe brands. That should tell you something about the quality of their food. It's excellent.
- Accuracy of order fulfillment for pickup: If you do use the online ordering process, this is super important. What if you ask for Unsalted butter and you get salted butter? The recipe is all off.
- Layout and cleanliness of the store: Trader Joe's always has staff cleaning the store and making sure it looks presentable.
- Quality of fresh meat and produce: Don't you hate it when you pay full price for produce only to find they hid the rotting strawberry at the bottom of the box? Super important and yay, Trader Joe's for getting this one right.
New Hampshire Has Zero Publix Locations
Tied with Trader Joe's is Publix. When I travel to other parts of the country, I notice this is a huge supermarket chain, but there are none in New Hampshire, Maine or Massachusetts.
Trader Joe's, however, has three locations in New Hampshire:
- Bedford
- Nashua
- Portsmouth
