Sadly, Bubby’s NY Style Delicatessen is closing!

The New York-style deli is closing its downtown Portsmouth location at Hanover and Bridge Streets in September, and Seacoastonline is reporting that steep rent prices in the downtown area have pushed the closure.

As Owner Gregg Schweitzer has said in the article, “we don’t serve $16 martinis and $35 steaks here.”

His lease on the property is ending soon, and he said it “didn’t make financial sense” to renew, according to Seacoastonline.

However, he hopes to re-open Bubby’s in the West End, the news site reports, and it could take up to 2 years for construction, so in the meantime he is looking for a temporary space.

He hopes to restyle the business model away from table service and move toward counter service.  He also has plans to focus more on the bagel.

Hopefully, we don’t have to wait two years for the return of Bubby’s NY Style Deli.

Schweitzer says to stay tuned on the businesses social media pages for updates. Here’s hoping we get our bagel fix sooner than later!
